The 2011 Farmer's Market will begin May 5th!

For the fourth year running, Canterbury Chapel is happy to host the Homegrown Alabama Farmer's Market, run by the Homegrown Alabama student organization at the University of Alabama. Every Thursday afternoon from May 5th to October 27th, from 3-6:00 PM, join us for fresh, local produce, honey, beef, eggs, flowers, baked goods and more. This years market features more local music, kids activities, chef demos, prepared food from local restaurants and much more. Also new to the 2011 market, Homegrown now accepts EBT/SNAP benefits. With the generous help of the students at Canterbury and revenue from football parking, for every $10 spent on EBT, Homegrown will match $5. If you would like to donate to this incentive program please visit the Homegrown website. We invite everyone to sit with us at our tables in the afternoon sun to talk and share with each other. We hope you will come and join us starting Thursday, May 5th!

Our New Local Food Ministry Initiative

We at Canterbury have loved hosting & supporting the Homegrown Alabama Farmer's Market for two years now, and we look forward to them restarting this May. We here at Canterbury are a bunch of food-nuts, and we love anything that helps support local food and better eating in our community. This year our students voted to allot $1,000 to purchase locally-grown, healthy, organic vegetables and other foods from our own farmer's market to then incorporate into our Tuesday morning food ministry. With the help of residents with great knowledge of local food prorgramming and education, as well as the leaders of the farmer's market, our goal is to provide help to community members who are in need of food to find healthy, nutritious ways to feed their families. Many families can be intimidated by fresh fruits and veggies because they do not know how to prepare them, and it can be easier to prepare processed food out of a box or out of a fast food bag. We hope that this year we can help families find ways to eat that are easy, healthy, and local. Check back here to our Homegrown Alabama page to see how this initiative goes when we start in ths Summertime!
