Student Outreach: Canterbury's Charities

Every Fall semester, the residents of Gribbin & Murray Houses at Canterbury work to park cars on the front lawn at our church. Every year 1/3 of the money is given toward church projects, 1/3 is given to the students as scholarships, and the final 1/3 of our money raised is given to charities chosen by our students & residents who helped raise the money. This year, we allotted over $6,000 to various charities around the world.

The Homegrown Alabama Farmer's Marker

picture

We at Canterbury have loved hosting & supporting the Homegrown Alabama Farmer's Market for two years now, and we look forward to them restarting this May. We here at Canterbury are a bunch of food-nuts, and we love anything that helps support local food and better eating in our community. This year our students voted to allot $1,000 to purchase locally-grown, healthy, organic vegetables and other foods from our own farmer's market to then incorporate into our Tuesday morning food ministry. With the help of residents with great knowledge of local food prorgramming and education, as well as the leaders of the farmer's market, our goal is to provide help to community members who are in need of food to find healthy, nutritious ways to feed their families. Many families can be intimidated by fresh fruits and veggies because they do not know how to prepare them, and it can be easier to prepare processed food out of a box or out of a fast food bag. We hope that this year we can help families find ways to eat that are easy, healthy, and local. Check back to our Homegrown Alabama page to see how this initiative goes when we start in ths Summertime!
